Silja Bára Ómarsdóttir is running for rector of the University of Iceland. The University of Iceland has been a foundation for higher education and research since its founding, and it is still one of the fundamental institutions of society. Together with other universities, it provides society with an environment for scientific research and innovation, training people for specialized jobs and educating new generations, it promotes and maintains culture, cultivates critical thinking and democratic values. It is therefore the foundation of the knowledge society we live in today. But the upcoming rector elections at the University of Iceland are taking place at a difficult time for universities and scientific activities.
There is no end in sight to the persistent underfunding of the university. The goal of funding for higher education in line with the OECD average has not been achieved and it is even further from reaching the Nordic average. At the same time as universities are being tightened, there is an increased demand for social utility and service to society. All of this has contributed to worsening working conditions, and it is enough to mention indications of increased staff stress, deteriorating health and a hiring ban that has very serious consequences for recruitment and knowledge development. This problem has been partially attempted to be solved by the contribution of part-time teachers who live under unacceptable terms and working conditions. Students are not immune to the hardships of the university.
To speak for the University in these circumstances, it takes an individual with experience, knowledge, ideals and the fighting spirit to try to reverse this trend. Silja Bára Ómarsdóttir is familiar with most aspects of university work, domestically and internationally. She has taught part-time and held precarious adjunct positions, and can therefore put herself in the shoes of those who are particularly disadvantaged in the university community.
Silja Bára has served on various committees of the University of Iceland, provided leadership to institutions and now sits on the University Council where she has acted in a remarkable manner. She is a very successful teacher and has made a great effort to pave the way for students in vulnerable situations. Silja Bára is a powerful researcher and knowledge broker and diligently fulfills her role as a university citizen. We, the undersigned, know Silja Bára Ómarsdóttir, her work and contribution to the University of Iceland and Icelandic society and trust her to lead the University of Iceland onto successful paths in the role of rector.
