On March 18-19, elections will be held for the next rector of the University of Iceland. As is clear, the position plays an important and strategic role in the affairs of the university, and therefore it is of great importance to carefully select a new rector. Dr. Silja Bára R. Ómarsdóttir offers her strengths and vision for the future of the University of Iceland.
I have been fortunate enough to work with Silja Bára in my studies and work and have come to know her as a leader in different fields. First at the university level where she guided me and other students in negotiations in an international context and later in policy development and implementation of the 2030 strategy for the Icelandic Red Cross. I have come to know Silja Bára as a leader and what characterizes her is her ability to unite different parties on important issues and her ability to make professional and fair decisions in favor of positive change. Silja Bára works with consideration, makes a great effort to consult with the parties involved and always strives to ensure that all points of view are heard in decision-making with equality and equity as a guiding principle. She is a leader who does not just talk empty words but works hard to make things happen.
Silja Bára has many years of experience in policy development, implementation and follow-up in management positions within the university community and outside. She knows how to work on changes, what challenges they entail and how to ensure that good ideas become real improvements. In her work and social work, she has emphasized equality, transparency, consultation and a professional approach to decision-making. She strongly emphasizes that policy development is not just empty, but that it includes real goals that are followed up with targeted actions. With successful experience in management and policy development, both in the academic field and in social work, she is well equipped to lead the university in the coming years.
The University of Iceland is facing major challenges when it comes to funding, working environment and sustainability. Silja Bára has already presented clear ideas on how to address these challenges and work towards a stronger university community. She is a leader who combines professional vision, knowledge and management skills with a clear methodology for success. With Silja Bára at the helm, the University of Iceland will have a strong leader who not only shapes policy but also follows it – into the future.
